I was asked this question the other day by a friend who was interested in
learning how to play the drum set… "Can I learn on my own?"
My answer was "of course you can!"  All you need is a  beginner drum lesson
book that is easy to follow and demonstrates accurately how you need to
perform the exercises.  In addition, watch drummers in music videos, at
shows and listen to them on recordings.  It also wouldn't hurt to take a few
lessons though you will find drum instructors vary in teaching styles.  Learn
all that you can.  Happy drumming!
